You feel everything. Notice everything. Remember everything. And you’re exhausted.

I know what it can be like because I was once there too.

You notice everything - every sound, texture, mood shift, and energy change around you

You replay interactions for days - analysing every tone, facial expression, and what people “really meant”

You absorb other people’s emotions like a sponge, leaving you drained and confused about what feelings are actually yours

Busy environments completely overwhelm you - shopping centres, parties, even family gatherings leave you needing hours to recover

You need more downtime than others understand - and you feel guilty or “lazy” for requiring so much alone time

You’ve been told you’re “too sensitive” your whole life - by family, friends, partners and even healthcare providers

You feel like you’re living life with no “skin” - everything hurts more, affects you more deeply, and takes longer to process

You’re exhausted from trying to be “normal” - masking your sensitivity, pretending loud places don’t bother you, forcing yourself to be social when you’re already overstimulated

The good news is that high sensitivity can become your greatest asset - if you learn how to harness and care for it.

As women, our monthly hormonal ups and downs can have a massive impact on our nervous system and increase our sensitivity. This is especially apparent as we enter our 40s which is known as the perimenopause…

We’ve often been so busy building our careers and looking after our family we forget to look after the most important person - ourselves. But as we hit the perimenopause, the things we do and don’t do really matter, especially when we’re highly sensitive. Our sensitive nervous system needs us to be in a good place so that our families can be in a good place too.

Feeling overwhelmed by life…

Perhaps we stop eating healthily and get by on adrenaline and coffee. We forget to exercise. Maybe we’ve discovered that we have the ability to hyperfocus. But in midlife, any periods of hyperfocus must be counterbalanced by rest & recovery, otherwise we risk overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout. All of a sudden, self-care is no longer a nice-to-have but a must-have. And if you’re highly sensitive, you often need much more self-care than your average person.

Struggling to manage…

Years of working against our high sensitivity and masking may have led to perfectionism and anxiety. Our confidence in ourselves and our abilities are affected and we might start to question our lives and choices. We might have limiting beliefs and even trauma in our past (sometimes without even knowing it), and they often show up big time in midlife as our protective oestrogen and progesterone decrease.

I know what it’s like because I’ve been there too.

For years, I thought something was wrong with me. I couldn’t understand why I felt everything so intensely, why I needed so much quiet time, why the world felt overwhelming even when everyone else seemed to navigate it just fine.

Then I discovered I’m not only highly sensitive - I also have ADHD and I am autistic (“AuDHD”). Suddenly, so many pieces of the puzzle fell into place. The overwhelm, the need for different ways to manage, the way my nervous system responds to the world - it all made sense.

They say that with awareness comes knowledge and with knowledge comes power. I now understand the complexity of having a nervous system that processes everything deeply.

I’ve walked the path of chronic overstimulation, emotional overwhelm, and trying to fit into a world that feels like too much - and I’ve found a way to not just survive but thrive.
